George Bahgoury was born in Bahgora, Upper Egypt, a town significant to the Coptic community. He began his career as a political cartoonist in 1953, publishing in Sabah Al Khair and Rose El Youssef. He later studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Zamalek under Hussein Bikar and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. In 1975, he shifted to focus entirely on his art. He is one of the prominent figures in Middle Eastern art and has exhibited internationally. His body of work spans political caricature, figurative painting, lithography, and large-scale oils—each piece animated by an unmistakable energy and a deep affection for the human condition.
